SAP BTP vs. SCP vs. HCP– what now?

In the area of SAP cloud offerings, SAP is very agile and offers customers and partners improvements and new services in short iterations. This agility has been somewhat missed by many customers and partners in the past, but in the meantime it is also easy to get caught up and lose track.

In the context of SAP Cloud, there has been and continues to be confusion due to rebrandings of the platform, so I would like to address the following questions below:

What is the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP)?

Is the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) ''just'' a rebranding of the SAP Cloud Platform (SCP)?

SAP describes SAP BTP as follows:

"SAP BTP is the platform for the Intelligent Enterprise. Customers achieve agility, business value, and continuous innovation through integration, value creation from data, and extensibility across all SAP and third-party applications and data assets." [1]

At its core, SAP BTP is about creating an integrated offering that allows customers to use function/services from four technology portfolios to flexibly implement solutions for individual requirements. The technology portfolios are:

  1. Database and Data Management
  2. Analytics
  3. Application Development and Integration
  4. Intelligent Technologies

The SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) replaces the SAP Cloud Platform (SCP) and existing services will be renamed, but this change is more than just a rebranding. SAP's goal is to remove potential barriers to accessing services in order to create a common basis for all SAP offerings that support the path to the "Intelligent Enterprise". Compared to SCP, SAP BTP offers a wider range of functions and can be seen as a further evolutionary stage of the SAP cloud offering.

My conclusion

It is certainly debatable whether a new name was really needed for the next evolutionary stage of the SAP cloud offering. But in terms of what SAP BTP offers us customers and partners, I am convinced that SAP BTP has given us an excellently positioned platform with many opportunities for digitization. It is now up to us to use the BTP to our advantage on the way to the "Intelligent Enterprise" and to implement innovative solutions.
