The SAP Fiori Launchpad is the standard user interface for the most important SAP solutions such as SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition and SAP S/4HANA On-Premise Edition.
The SAP Fiori Launchpad provides business users with intuitive access to the apps assigned to them based on their role. Here they can find everything they need to complete their tasks on the device that best suits their working environment.
The SAP Fiori Launchpad with “My Home” as the start page serves as the entry point for a single SAP S/4HANA system. The SAP Build Work Zone, on the other hand, provides a central entry point across multiple systems - e.g. several SAP S/4HANA systems, SAP cloud solutions, individually developed applications or third-party systems.
At a time when user-friendliness, mobility and process clarity are key requirements for business software, the SAP Fiori Launchpad has established itself as a strategic element in our SAP application landscape. It not only forms the central entry level for our users, but also the basis for role-based, task-oriented and future-proof use of our SAP systems.
With SAP Fiori, we offer our users a modern, intuitive and role-based user interface that not only increases productivity, but also makes our SAP landscape fit for the future.

The SAP Fiori Launchpad offers a uniform, cross-device user interface with comprehensive services for navigation, personalization and application access - scalable for simple to complex roles. The Fiori Launchpad is an integral part of SAP S/4HANA On-Premise Edition, SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition and the SAP BTP ABAP environment, as well as other SAP solutions, and does not require an additional platform. It uses the authorizations and roles of the respective system and is automatically available when using the SAP S/4HANA software.
SAP Fiori is SAP's modern design concept for intuitive, role-based user interfaces. It replaces complex transaction screens with clear, task-oriented apps that are displayed as tiles in the Launchpad and work equally well on desktops, tablets and smartphones.
SAP Fiori apps are responsive and automatically adapt to different screen sizes - whether on a smartphone, tablet or desktop. This allows users to access SAP processes at any time and from any location, e.g. to issue approvals or view orders.
The SAP Fiori Launchpad is not just limited to Fiori apps - it can launch various application types, in particular older SAP user interfaces (SAP GUI for HTML, ABAP Web Dynpro, Web Client UIs) and also URL-based apps, as well as self-developed SAP BTP applications.

SAP Fiori Launchpad vs. SAP Work Zone
With the Fiori Launchpad and the SAP Build Work Zone, SAP offers two different approaches for accessing SAP applications. Both solutions serve as a start page for users, but differ clearly in their range of functions and strategic area of application:
| Criteria | SAP Fiori Launchpad | SAP Build Work Zone |
|---|---|---|
Objective | Entry into a single SAP system (e.g. S/4HANA) | Central platform for several |
Technical basis | Part of SAP S/4HANA | Cloud service on SAP BTP |
System integration | System-bound, limited external connections | Cross-system, with SSO, Task Center, global search |
Range of functions | App launchpad with tiles, role-based | Expandable with UI cards, pages/spaces, branding, mobile compatible |
Collaboration & content functions | Not planned | Erweiterte Ausgabe: Arbeitsbereiche, Wikis, Nachrichten, Team-Integration |
User experience | Simple, established, familiar | Modern UI, Horizon design, continuous updates |
Licensing | Included in S/4HANA | Separately via BTP subscription or CPEA |
Recommended for | Companies with only one central SAP system | Companies with multiple systems, digital workplace needs or collaboration goals |
Future security | Suitable for stable, focused scenarios | Strategic SAP solution for central platforms, growing with the requirements |

The SAP Fiori Launchpad offers a modern, role-based user interface that has been specially developed to provide users with clearly structured and personalized access to their daily tasks in their SAP S/4HANA system. The interface is based on the Fiori design principle, which stands for simplicity, consistency and user-friendliness. Users only see the applications that are relevant to their role - presented in the form of tiles, lists or groups. This clear visualization ensures intuitive operation and significantly reduces complexity compared to classic SAP GUI interfaces.
Collaboration or extensive editorial content (text, images, videos, etc.) are not provided. However, SAP Joule is already available in the SAP Fiori Launchpad, as can be seen in the screenshot.
The Work Zone offers additional features over and above the pure launchpad functions. In the Standard Edition, the focus is on the app launchpad (similar to the familiar tiles, but supplemented by more modern layouts through the use of UI cards and the integration of a wide range of content.
The Advanced Edition then adds extensive content and collaboration functions. This even allows users to create and publish content independently - e.g. wikis - which is reserved for administrators only in the Standard Edition. The Advanced Edition also includes interactive team areas for collaboration, discussions and shared document repositories, templates for pages, extended menu structures and the integration of unstructured content (knowledge base articles, multimedia, etc.), of course always in the context of applications, both SAP and non-SAP solutions. In short, Work Zone Advanced is a fully-fledged intranet and collaboration portal: it combines applications, content and collaboration on a modern, central platform.
However, the SAP Build Work Zone requires the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) as a technical basis - which strategically means that SAP customers are moving into the cloud. However, many companies see precisely this as an advantage: as a cloud layer, the central entry point can also encompass hybrid landscapes and is decoupled from the release cycles of individual backend systems. Work Zone is SAP's strategic solution for standardized “one-stop” access and combines applications, content and collaboration on a central platform. With Work Zone, SAP customers get a versatile out-of-the-box solution that increases user productivity and creates a consistent user experience. The added value of a uniform, modern digital workplace quickly pays for the associated investment, especially when many users have to switch between applications on a daily basis.
The SAP Fiori Launchpad and the SAP Build Work Zone are not in competition, but address different needs. The Launchpad is ideal “on a small scale” - i.e. for the individual system and easy access to its apps. The Work Zone, on the other hand, shows its strengths “on a large scale” - as a central hub for a company's entire application landscape.
When making your choice, you should ask yourself: Do our users need a single, central access point for all business processes, information and tasks? If so, there is hardly any way around the SAP Build Work Zone. If, on the other hand, the landscape is manageable and focused, the classic Fiori Launchpad already provides everything necessary - and you can take advantage of its simplicity and familiarity.
Ultimately, a staged approach can also make sense: many customers start with the Fiori Launchpad in the modern SAP user experience and grow into the Work Zone as required as soon as the requirements for a central digital workplace with SAP increase. The good news is that SAP has combined and harmonized both approaches on a technical basis, making it easy to switch from Launchpad-based use to a comprehensive approach based on the SAP Work Zone at a later date.
